CAPSTONE

The Buzz on Bumble

Jessica's Capstone project consisted of looking at the social consequences and implications of the dating app Bumble. Recently, dating apps have changed the scene of dating which traditionally consisted of conventional gender roles. Bumble was created by Whitney Wolfe as a feminist dating app, in which women make the first move in heterosexual matches.

To gather adequate data, six 30-minute interviews were dispensed to three male students and three female students. Unexpectedly, the results were surprising. The male students interviewed were ultimately attracted to women who initiated contact; suggesting that the Bumble app attracted men who did not subscribe to traditional gender norms in a romantic partnership. However, the women interviewed clung to traditional gender roles in dating, and used loopholes in the app so that they did not have to initiate conversations.
